Project overview

This project aims to investigate the buildup of blue green algae, and associated taste and odors, in water treatment plants to consider management strategies that may minimise or avoid their build up.

Methodology

Research involved collecting samples from eight water treatment plants during algal bloom events to better understand the occurrence and impact of blue-green algae (BGA) in treated water. Monash University analysed these samples to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of various treatment strategies aimed at reducing algal cells and their metabolites.

Project outcomes

A joint workshop brought together stakeholders to share findings, discuss management strategies, and refine feasible treatment options tailored to the needs of individual facilities. The outcomes were compiled into a comprehensive final report and prepared for dissemination through a peer-reviewed journal article.
