To develop new fertiliser products supporting crop water use efficiency and production

Food & Fibre Gippsland will be working with commercial horticulture producers across eastern Gippsland and a commercial company supporting new fertiliser products that utilise lignite (an approach to build soil carbon, retain N in the soil (reducing GHG emissions) and build advanced soil water holding capacity).  New fertiliser formulations have been developed with producers that can be used in field trials comparing new products with business as usual (normal practice).  We will measure crop production, soil moisture (via advanced sensor networks) and key soil measurements.

The project commenced in May 2022 and will be completed in July 2023. Two fields day, a major demonstration site (including comparison of fertilisers and soil water measurement) and producer engagement through discussion for a will occur throughout the project. A final report of outcomes and impact (including potential adoption rates) will be available in September 2023.
