“You won’t remember the extra kilometre of fence you got up, but you will remember the time spent camping with your kids.” – Adrian Coatsworth, Wycheproof

“Over The Fence” is a new book to share innovative ideas and information among farming families in North-West Victoria. A compilation of interviews with farmers and those in the wider farming industry, the book’s aim is to boost mental health through positive imagery.

In 2005 and 2006, Birchip Cropping Group (BCG) – the North-West Broadacre Node lead of the Victoria Drought Resilience Adoption & Innovation Hub – compiled a series of weekly interviews. Initiated during a period of drought, the idea was to foster connections among people and share valuable information “over the fence”.

Fast forward two decades, and BCG is part of the Vic Hub, at the forefront of supporting farmers through the Federal Government’s Future Drought Fund (FDF) initiative.

BCG is proud to present the second generation of “Over The Fence”, viewed through the lens of drought resilience.

The series seeks to capture pearls of wisdom derived from lived experiences, share information and inspire innovative approaches to proactive risk mitigation. Additionally, the series spotlights the diverse business profiles thriving in the region, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of our local communities.

BCG thanks all interviewees for their selfless participation in the project, along with the photographers who captured the magnificence of the landscape and people of North-West Victoria.

As participant Adrian Coatsworth, of Wycheproof, said: “Finally, it’s important to remember that no amount of money will suffice for time spent with your family. When you need a holiday take it; the farm isn’t going anywhere. You won’t remember the extra kilometre of fence you got up, but you will remember the time spent camping with your kids.”
