Field day on high-performing maize production at Katunga, northern Victoria, involved AgriSci, Irrigation Farmers Network, GRDC and Victoria Drought Resilience Adoption & Innovation HubA good turnout for the GRDC-supported field day today on high-performing maize production at Katunga, in northern Victoria. Organised by the Irrigation Farmers Network, soils were a focus for the day, with a lot of interest in how production could be increased by improving subsoil structure.

Presenters included soils consultant Dr Cassie Schefe, from AgriSci, who talked about soil health, with the take-home message to do a soil test before doing anything. Cassie said soil test results inform fertiliser inputs, so there is no point spreading nitrogen without having the right levels of other nutrients. She said similarly with any amelioration work, a soil test ensures any efforts to improve soils are maximised.

Damin Jones, Trials Manager with IFN, and grower Ray Thornton (on whose property the day was held, and who has been growing maize for 30 years), covered all facets of maize growing, including nitrogen decisions and Ray’s experience with both the upside and downside of strip tillage, the use of pop-ups and sowing equipment; while Victoria Soil Co-ordinator, Dr Peter Fisher, from the Victoria Drought Resilience Adoption & Innovation Hub, talked about the importance of completing the national soil survey currently open to help understand soil issues, knowledge gaps and opportunities across Victoria (and the nation).
