International Day for Biodiversity

This week marks the International Day for Biodiversity on Tuesday 22nd. This year’s theme “Be Part of the Plan” is a call to action to reverse biodiversity loss by supporting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, known as The Biodiversity Plan.

One of our projects looking at biodiversity is “Building Soil Resilience and Carbon Through Plant Diversity” led by North-East Node Riverine Plains, in collaboration with the North-West Node Birchip Cropping Group.

The project aims to help farmers improve soil resilience to maintain or enhance productivity amidst an increasingly variable climate. By promoting plant diversity, the project helps create farming systems that are better equipped to handle drought conditions. Research at two long-term field sites evaluates the impact of diverse cropping systems on promoting robust and sustainable farming practices over the medium term, spanning 4-7 years.
