Researchers from all fields are invited to register for Drought Resilience 2025, to be held in Geelong from 9 to 11 July 2025.

Delivered by the Victoria Drought Resilience Adoption & Innovation Hub (Vic Hub), which is supported by the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund, this conference will bring together leading thinkers and emerging voices from across the sciences, health, law, business, technology, humanities, arts and traditional knowledge systems to share, discuss and challenge current approaches to drought resilience.

Vic Hub Director Dr Sara Hely said, “Drought Resilience 2025 is designed to maximise the diversity of discipline areas within each session theme, providing a rare opportunity for researchers to learn about alternative methods and strategies that address similar questions or contexts in drought resilience.”

Conference themes include:

  • Resilient landscapes: built, natural and human-impacted ecosystems
  • Resilient communities: physical and mental health, education, connections and creativity
  • Resilient industries and economies: businesses, industry, tourism
  • Resilience technologies and practices: novel and underutilised strategies for drought resilience
  • Predicting and planning for drought: forecasting and planning in a changing climate
  • Lessons from the past: effects and learnings from previous droughts
  • Emerging issues and opportunities: new and less-understood impacts of drought

Dr Hely said the program features plenary presentations from leading experts, including Professor Jacki Schirmer (University of Canberra’s Centre for Environmental Governance, and leader of the WellRes Unit), Dr Isaya Kisekka (hydrologic process specialist, University of California, Davis, USA), and Angelina Siegrist (Sustainable Farms initiative, ANU)

“Launching Drought Resilience Interdisciplinary Network (DRI-Net) will be a conference highlight. DRI-Net will connect researchers across disciplines, foster innovative research collaborations, and provide members with regular updates about funding, training and events. DRI-Net members will also have access to dedicated networking and career development opportunities at the conference.”

Dr Hely said, “Drought Resilience 2025 is about bringing together a broad community of researchers to share knowledge and approaches that can lead to practical, real-world impact. By connecting across disciplines and with stakeholders, we can drive innovation and strengthen Australia’s capacity to respond to future droughts.”

Registrations close on Friday 20 June. For more information on the program, plenary speakers, and to register, visit the Drought Resilience 2025 conference website: https://www.droughtresilience.info

Drought-resource focus

Dr Hely also highlighted the Vic Hub’s new 2025 Dry Season & Seasonal Conditions Resources section.

“Tough conditions in many parts of Victoria are taking a toll on farmers and communities, and while Australian farmers show remarkable resilience, understanding what resources are available can be critical.

“The Vic Hub’s work is focused on engendering preparedness for, and resilience during, drought. In uncertain times such as now, understanding what resources are available to farmers is part of that.”

She said the comprehensive section will help regional communities access timely and trusted information during dry times, with the resources designed to support planning, decision-making and wellbeing for farmers and their families. The tools and resources encompass federal, state and on-the-ground help via the Vic Hub’s Nodes.
